The Less Travelled Path Leads the Way

In 2009, few people were out running the country roads. It’s ironic because today, we’re constantly reminded to “run for your mental health,” yet back then, people thought I was mental for running at all. That, in itself, was a life lesson. I was stubborn and ran anyway.

Looking back, I consider myself lucky to have learned early on that the road less travelled is often the most rewarding. True mental freedom comes from doing what you love, regardless of what others think.

The key? Listen to your inner self. Follow your passions. The paths that challenge us the most often bring the greatest rewards.

Why Apply for Marathon Leader?

Some of the best decisions I’ve made have been impulsive. Overthinking leads to inaction. As the Irish proverb goes, doubt is a deep hole.

This year, as I approach 40, I have a few goals I want to tick off before hitting that milestone. My husband and I signed up for the Cork City Marathon at Christmas. When we saw the opportunity to apply as marathon leaders, we jumped at the chance, not just to challenge ourselves but to hopefully inspire others to take on something they never thought they could do.

My husband comes from a background in semi-professional football and has spent years coaching others in movement and fitness. He’s been surrounded by incredible people, learning from their experiences, and now, we feel it’s our time to share our own. As busy parents, professionals, and dream chasers, we want to show that it is possible to push limits, no matter your starting point.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Becoming a marathon leader isn’t about running 26.2 miles—it’s about helping others take that first step. Maybe that’s a daily walk, a short jog, or signing up for a challenge that once felt impossible. Too many people never reach their potential, not because they aren’t capable, but because they don’t believe they are.

I see it every day in the mirror. Self-doubt, overthinking, and fear hold us back. So every day, I push myself just a little more. I hold myself accountable. I put myself in uncomfortable situations because I know that is where growth happens.

20 Miles of Perspective

Recently I ran my longest distance in a decade - 20 miles. That’s over three hours of running with no distractions, no alerts, just me and my thoughts. When I finished, I asked myself: What was I even thinking about for three hours?

The answer? Reflection. Dreaming. Reminding myself I can keep going.

How did I manage 20 miles without stopping? The answer is simple: I started.

I went from walking to running 200 meters, then gradually increased my mileage each week. We hear it all the time - consistency is key. And I hate to say it, but it’s true.

There are no shortcuts. And that’s exactly why the lonely route always leads the way.
